There are some weddings that feel beautifully planned, and then there are weddings that feel as though the universe quietly conspired to make them magical. Meredith and David’s elopement in City Park felt like the latter.
When Meredith first described her vision for their wedding photographs, she used the words whimsical, bohemian and botanical. As two people who deeply love the outdoors, it was important to her and David that their wedding day felt connected to nature.
And nature, it turns out, had plans of its own. For an entire week leading up to the wedding, New Orleans was drenched in rain. The kind of relentless spring rain that makes you nervously refresh weather apps and volley texts back and forth asking “should we move this to somewhere else?” But almost unbelievably, the skies cleared just in time.
City Park was, admittedly, a bit of a sloshy mess. The pathways were soft beneath our feet, and puddles glistened everywhere. I affirmed with Meredith several times that she was OK if the bottom of her dress got dirty. She was a real trooper!
But in the wake of all that rain, something extraordinary had happened … The resurrection ferns had come alive! If you’ve never seen them after a soaking rain, resurrection ferns are a quiet miracle of the South — curled and dry for long stretches, only to unfurl into lush green life when the conditions are just right. Draped across the ancient oaks, they transformed the park into something almost otherworldly. What might have been ordinary on another day suddenly looked like an enchanted forest. And it couldn’t have suited Meredith’s vision more perfectly. Everywhere we turned, there was softness and texture, mossy branches, wild greenery, and the whimsical feeling that we had stumbled into a storybook.
And to complete that fairytale ending to this perfect story, a butterfly floated in and landed directly on Meredith’s bouquet. Maybe it was simply a butterfly enjoying the post-rain sunshine. Or maybe — as weddings so often invite us to believe — it felt like something more. A blessing. A tiny whisper from someone dearly loved. A magical spirit stopping by to say, yes, this is exactly as it should be. Whatever you believe, it felt impossibly special.
Meredith and David’s wedding reminded us of something we see again and again: the most meaningful celebrations are rarely the biggest ones. Sometimes, they’re the quietest. Two people, deeply in love, choosing each other in a place that feels true to who they are — while the world around them rises up to meet the moment.
Rain-soaked earth. Ancient oaks. Resurrection ferns in full glory. A butterfly blessing.
Honestly, we can’t imagine a more perfect beginning.
