“Home is wang your hat” my boys would mispronounce when they were little, and it still makes me laugh to this day! That has always been a favorite expression of mine. And while home may be where the little guy in this family hangs his many cool hats, it’s also a place where this family relaxes, plays and enjoys spending time together. So it felt natural that we should do their yearly family photo shoot there.
When a family contacts me about their family portraits, we talk for a bit about who they are, what they do for fun and the like. Interaction like that is what fuels my creative juices and gets me thinking about how best to tell their story! So coming up with a beautiful, picturesque setting is important to providing the backdrop for the art work that will grace their walls. But the story is always on my mind … what do I want them to remember about this place, this day, this time in their lives?
I particularly loved capturing these guys at their home. My hope is that one day this little guy will come across these images, and fondly remember the house where he grew up. But my hope is that he sees it as so much more than the building. I really want him to see it as the place where he loved and laughed with his mom and dad, the place where he lost his first tooth, played in the yard under his favorite tree, felt the ache of missing a friend who moved away, and dared to dream big about all the things he might do with his life. Those are the kinds of gifts that photographers can give to people; it’s why I do what I do.
